Young Writers Contest 2012


In celebration of this year’s Savannah Children’s Book Festival, write a poem and include at least 5 words from some of our featured festival books.

Your poem can be about any topic of your choice. So get creative and pick from the words in the flyer.

Your poem may be in any format, e.g. haiku, sonnet, acrostic, ballad, cinquain, quatrain, etc., including free form verse. Maximum length is 20 lines (longer poems will be disqualified) and on no more than one page. There is no minimum length. Poems must be submitted on 8 ½ by 11 white paper (4 copies required) at any library branch. (No emailed entries, please.) We prefer typed entries using one ink color (blue or black) and a simple font. If handwritten, entries must be easy to read and in pencil or blue/black ink. Work will be judged on its creativity and clever use of the required words. Please do not include illustrations or any type of design.
Remember to use the resources at the library to research poetry styles. You can also go to the library to use a computer to write your poem, or use your library Power Card to make copies of your poem. Entry Deadline is Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, by 6 p.m.

The five categories of competition are:
Grades K - 2
Grades 3 - 5
Grades 6 - 8
Grades 9 - 12

All entries must include: Student’s name, home address, age, school, grade, and phone numbers. Your email address is optional, but very helpful in notifying you more promptly if you are a winner.
The contest is open to all area students. You must have parental permission to enter. Poems become the property of Live Oak Public Libraries. You may submit more than one entry.
Winners in each age group will receive gift certificates from Target. First place - $50, second place - $30, and third place - $20. Winners will be announced on Fri., Oct. 26, 2012, on our website,, and will be notified by phone, mail or email. The library will host a reception for the winners, their families and writing teachers at the Bull Street Library on Wed., Nov. 7, 2012, at 5 p.m.

The 9th annual Savannah Children’s Book Festival is set for Saturday, Nov. 10, at Forsyth Park. It is presented by Live Oak Public Libraries and the City of Savannah with generous support from the Live Oak Public Libraries Foundation and Gulfstream Aerospace.
