Reviews: It’s Time for Some Football!

A Few Seconds of Panic, by Stefan Fatsis. Stefan Fatsis – a 5’ 8, 40-ish sportswriter – is NOT a football player, yet he managed to get the Denver Broncos to take him on as a place kicker for one memorable summer training camp. Through his eyes, you’ll see how rookies are treated, how difficult it is for players to maintain their places on the team, and what it's really like inside an NFL locker room.

The Genius: How Bill Walsh Reinvented Football and Created an NFL Dynasty, by David Harris. As football season heats up, what better time to take a look at the man who turned 1978's worst NFL team into a powerhouse that won the Superbowl only three seasons later?

Eli Manning: The Making of a Quarterback, by Ralph Vacchiano. New York Daily News sportswriter Vacchiano brings an insider's perspective to his account (with lots of comments from teammates and coaches) of Manning's journey from college star to NFL champion – as well as his role as the younger brother and son of established quarterbacks.

Running for My Life: My Journey in the Game of Football and Beyond, by Warrick Dunn. NFL star running back Warrick Dunn, whose police officer mother’s death left him the head of his large family while still in college, tells his inspirational life story.

The Glory Game, by Frank Gifford. Gifford reminisces about what has been called the most memorable game in football history – the 1958 NFL Championship game between his New York Giants and the Baltimore Colts. Gifford’s insights into the football of the 1950s are as entertaining as his stints were on Monday Night Football.

The Best Game Ever: Giants vs. Colts, 1958, and the Birth of the Modern NFL, by Mark Bowden, is another look at this unforgettable clash, that involved seventeen future Hall of Fame players and coaches, and was the first ever to go into sudden death overtime to determine a winner.

Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty, by Jeff Pearlman. The Cowboys, called America’s Team, won three Superbowls in the 1990s with players who produced as many headlines outside of the sports section as inside it. This is a look at one of football’s greatest dynasties.

The Express: The Ernie Davis Story, by Robert C. Gallagher. This is a portrait of a legendary football star who broke Jim Brown's rushing records and became the first black athlete to win the Heisman Trophy, but who lost his life too young in a battle with leukemia.

The Galloping Ghost: Red Grange, an American Football Legend, by Gary Andrew Poole. Poole’s new biography of one of football’s founding legends focuses on Grange’s pioneering role in the transformation of a backlot game into a money-making machine, along the way turning athletes into the highly paid celebrities we take for granted today.
