Reviews: World Series Time

An American Classic: The World Series at 100, by Ken Leiker. This lavishly illustrated history of the series might be said to cover all the bases – the greatest upsets, the best plays, the most unlikely heroes – they’re all there, along with an overview of World Series dynasties through the years.

Fisk's Homer, Willie's Catch and the Shot Heard Round the World, by G. Richard McKelvey. McKelvey recounts both the incredible feats and the tragic mistakes that make postseason baseball and the World Series so memorable.

Eight Men Out: the Black Sox and the 1919 World Series, by Eliot Asinof. A classic book on the epic baseball scandal that stunned the nation and led to a plea that’s rung down the years, from a disbelieving fan to Shoeless Joe Jackson: Say it ain’t so, Joe!

Reversing the Curse, by Dan Shaughnessy. The long-awaited triumph of the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 World Series is detailed by a Boston Globe sports writer who saw the team through its worst days and finally was able to see it at its best.

None but the Braves, by Tom Glavine. This list wouldn’t be complete without a nod to the Atlanta Braves, who won their division title an unprecedented 14 times from 1991-2005, and the World Series in 1995. Glavine pitched the 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians in game six of ‘95 to clinch Atlanta's world championship.

Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino. In 1918 the Boston Red Sox won their fifth World Series, thanks in great part to a young pitching and hitting sensation named George Herman Ruth, a.k.a. The Babe, or The Bambino. A year later Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold the Babe to the New York Yankees, and the 86-year Series drought that followed became known as The Curse of the Bambino – only finally broken in 2004.

Nine Innings from Ground Zero. The tragedy of 9/11 triggered a host of changes in America, including a reassessment of the role of sports and its accompanying hero-worship. Batting averages and home run totals were no longer paramount, particularly in New York, but in the fall of 2001 baseball played a significant role in the city's recovery efforts.

Baseball – an Illustrated History, by Geoffry Ward & Ken Burns. In this definitive DVD series on baseball, you’ll find the complete story of the sport and the characters and events that have made it an enduring American obsession. The library owns both the DVD set and the companion book.
