Summer Reading grand prize winners announced

Live Oak Public Libraries is pleased to announce the winners of the three 2013 Summer Reading Program Atlanta Grand Prize Family Getaways. Each prize package includes a three-night stay at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta; admission for 4 to World of Coca Cola, Zoo Atlanta, Fernbank Museum, and the Center for Puppetry Arts; a $250 VISA gift card; and a $100 Enmark gas card.

Live Oak Public Libraries serves Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty counties. A winner was chosen from among eligible program participants in each county.  The three county winners are: Chatham County - Hailey Lucero, age 3; Effingham County – Regan Baker, age 10; and Liberty County – Raymond Senn, age 2.

Area children earned an entry in the getaway drawing every time they completed 10 hours of reading this summer. Children who are not reading yet participated by being read to, encouraging families to read out loud together. Those children who completed 40 hours of reading received an extra entry in the drawing and also were declared VIP Readers. VIP Readers also received a VIP Reader’s backpack and a Golden Ticket which they will present at Savannah Children’ Book Festival in Forsyth Park on Saturday, Nov. 16, to receive a VIP Reader’s badge. The names of this year’s VIP Readers will be published in the Savannah Morning News in November.

The 18 branches of the library system have been busy since the program began June 1.  A total of 4,059 young readers registered for the program this year. Of those who registered for the program, 2,497 children read for 10 hours; 1,878 children read for 20 hours; 1,550 children read for 30 hours; and 1,329 children read for 40 hours, becoming VIP Readers.

This summer 299,632 books were checked out by the program participants who read a combined 58,590 hours. The library presented 544 special programs during the ten week program, which brought 19,486 area residents into the libraries.

The program is funded by the Live Oak Public Libraries Foundation. The program is part of the foundation’s READ! SUCCEED! initiative, funding quality literacy programs based on proven practices to touch families in our community. READ! SUCCEED! programs are carefully designed to help a child learn to read for a lifetime, assist a student with homework, or inspire an adult to share the joy of reading with the next generation.
